Sustainability

Golf is a celebration of nature

Sustainability at Bernardus Golf

At Bernardus Golf, our vision is to lead the way in sustainability, setting the standard for golf courses globally. We believe golf is a celebration of nature, which is why we designed our course inspired by and in harmony with nature. This is one reason you will find many heather plants at Bernardus, a species native to this part of the Netherlands. Golf courses can serve as carbon sinks and beacons of biodiversity. Our course, situated on former agricultural land within a Natura 2000 site, has been transformed into a haven for wildlife, with 50% of our 80-hectare estate dedicated to pure nature. We aim to maintain our course in top condition using the most natural methods possible.

Commitment to Natural Maintenance

‘Brown is the New Green’

We do not use chemicals to maintain the course. Instead, our team of 17 dedicated greenkeepers works tirelessly to keep the facilities in impeccable condition. They focus on maintaining the correct balance of bacteria and fungi in the soil, and we invest in technologies that measure soil health and detect diseases before they can spread, ensuring the grass stays healthy and vibrant naturally.

At Bernardus, we believe that "brown is the new green." We embrace a shift towards more sustainable golf course management. Brown, drier fairways require fewer resources and support firm and fast surfaces, akin to the original links courses in Scotland. Although it may take time for golfers to adjust, they will come to appreciate that "brown is beautiful."

A Special Grass Species

Fescue Grass

We use fescue grass at Bernardus, which, due to its long roots, requires less water and nutrients, grows slower, and reduces the need for frequent mowing. This species helps us maintain world-class playing surfaces sustainably.

Smart Technology

For Sustainable Water Management

The drainage system at Bernardus ensures the maximum amount of rainwater is absorbed throughout the course. In addition, we are developing an underground water storage solution to store and harvest rainwater year-round. We follow a strict nutritional plan, providing the grass with only what it needs to survive. Our advanced irrigation system ensures precise water application, using moisture meters to identify areas that need watering. This technology helps us conserve water and maintain healthy turf.

Clubhouse

Renewable Energy

And Sustainable Operations

All our buildings operate entirely on renewable energy, some of which is generated through our own solar panels. The machinery used for the maintenance of our course is, where possible, electric. By 2025, our clubhouse and other buildings will be BREEAM certified, showcasing our dedication to improving the sustainability performance of our assets.

Maintaining a Balanced Ecosystem

Located within a Natura 2000 site, Bernardus Golf is committed to fostering a balanced ecosystem. Our nature areas are as important as our playing surfaces. By limiting the use of precious resources, we protect our planet while maintaining a world-class golf course. Since April 2024, ecologists and birdwatcher from NLadviseurs have been conducting comprehensive, year-long research on our flora and fauna. This includes mapping nesting birds and using cameras to observe mammals, culminating in the creation of a nature opportunity map to guide further conservation efforts. We promote local wildlife such as badgers by creating dedicated ‘nature zones’ and, in collaboration with local water authorities, we have created a special habitat on our site to reintroduce local amphibians, fish, and plants.

Education, Research, and Advocacy

Educating ourselves and our golfers about sustainable practices is crucial. The European Tour prioritizes firm, fast, and true playing conditions over aesthetic perfection. By promoting this mindset, we encourage a return to traditional golf play while supporting sustainability. We are proud to possess the GEO certificate and aim to educate our members and employees on the importance of sustainability in golf.
